The Kiss

And so,
after all the words
have been spent,
this is
how love is:

the lover
adores from above
and does not need
to show his face,

his beloved
bathed in affection,
eyes closed
in holy rapture,

both lost
to this world
and
both lost
in each other.
Gustav Klimt, The Kiss (Lovers), oil and gold leaf on canvas, 1908–1909. Ã–sterreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna, 180 cm × 180 cm

  1. This is an exquisite piece of work! Loved your choice of artwork chosen for this prompt. Love can be explained in a million ways but yours has done complete justice!

  5. I am lost in your poem! He does look like he has enraptured her or she-him!
I chose the same painting! I, also love the beauty of The Kiss.

  6. Yes, I think that goes to the heart of the image. Simple and clean writing that has all the more impact. Sidenote: I have always thought of this picture as a 'chick' sort of thing, but here it is with a completely spot-on poem by a poet I think of as totally male. Also, I bought a mug with this screened on it, loved it, totally entranced, and after the second day, my husband appropriated it--I never get to drink out of it. So, shows what I know about Venus and Mars. ;_)

  7. Hi Buddah ~~ I like your kind of love, for sure until the last verse it is God's type of love. To me, the last verse explains how a couple in love acts towards each other.
I am not familiar with this artwork. Is there a message in it that this poem needs or is it merely inspiration and/or illustration for this poem?

  11. You have captured the painting, the feeling with your words. Love looks upon love and cares not for outward eyes.

  12. You've captured this—one of my favorite works of art—and love quite beautifully.

  17. I love the piece you've chosen, and your words about it. I think your opening stanza is brilliant:

    And so,
    after all the words
    have been spent,
    this is
    how love is:

and each stanza following, simple and right and true.

  18. I love this, Mosk. For two reasons. No...three: 1. You wrote it (and I love everything you write); 2. I did one of those crazy online "quizzes" that said Klimt's THE KISS was the masterpiece that fit my answers; 3. You described perfectly what I still long to have someday. Thank you for sharing this!! <3
